It is the beginning of a new decade!! To celebrate the new year and the new decade, the nerDy Word has composed a list of the best games of the decade. The categories and all nominees were voted on by a panel of ten gamers of various ages. This list was challenging to compile and there were a lot of heated debates upon many of the nominees and winners. Each catagory started with a much larger list of nominees and were narrowed down to the top 3 votes, with some exceptions to certain categories. Said exceptions will be noted by the nominee for clarification. All ties were broken by voting again for the remaining titles. Some votes were overturned by persuasion during debate. The order of winners are no particular order.

Today marks the last day of 2009 and what better way to wrap up the year than to post the best in nerdiness for the entire year. This list is composed of games that have not only sold well, but truly entertained gamers and left them wanting more. In no particular order, let the list commence!
1. Mario Kart (Wii): This game brings back all of our childhood memories. Many years ago we blew air into our worn out Mario Kart cartridges for the N64 and fired up another couple of laps of this amazing game. Mario Kart, revamped for the Wii, is addicting and challenging with the new feature of online play opening up a world of possibilities. Many gamers look at their Wii as an expensive paper weight, but with the release of Mario Kart and the #2 selection, it has been dusted off for more play.
2. The New Super Mario Brothers (Wii): Again, Nintendo did it perfectly with the multi player aspect. Back in the day as kids we never would have imagined up to four people playing on the same screen. This was a much needed touch for the Wii and the game is so fun and exciting that it is sure to be the highlight of 2009’s game list.
3. Left 4 Dead 2 (XBox 360): Everyone loved L4D right? You must. Zombies and online multi player at the same time in one sentence omgroflcopter! How can you not enjoy loading up your shotty with some friends and heading out to knock off some heads? Definitely a game that can be picked up at any gamer-level to enjoy some zombie apocalypse mayhem.
(To be continued..)
I expierenced Heavy Rain during E3. Well, those are words that I wish were true. It is more like I watched other people expierence Heavy Rain on the TV while I was watching E3, but I can dream! I was very impressed by the game play for Heavy Rain. The director, David Cage, described the game as “a very dark film noir thriller with mature themes”, and that “the real message [of the game] is about how far you’re willing to go to save someone you love.”
The controls seem very unique, just as unique as the game play, as David Cage as described that you are able to control the characters head as well as his speed with one of the triggers on the controller. I watched as someone played a demo at E3 and while he was playing David had mentioned that the story arch could change based on the decisions that you make during the game. I personally respect story boards more when they are complicated and intelligent enough to change based on what decisions are made during the game play as it leaves more chances of another play through in order to get different stories and endings to the game.
Heavy Rain is scheduled for release in 2010.
And now, a more in depth view of all characters in BlazBlue. This information is from a combination of websites including BlazBlue, Wiki, and Dustloop Forums put together in one location for easy viewing pleasure.
Height: 192 cm

Birthday: January 1
Blood Type: B
Hobbies: Training, thinking of names for his special moves
Values: The 6-foot nail (memento of his master)
A real man, who never compromises in either his duty or his desires. He’s very impulsive, although whether that’s a good trait or a bad one is open to interpretation. As he a ninja, he takes good care of his henchmen and subordinates.
After losing his home in the Ikaruga Civil War and his master Tenjo at the hands of Jin Kisaragi, Bang and his followers began living in Kagutsuchi waiting for the right moment to strike back at the NOL. There, he, while being a ninja, declares himself a hero of justice and dedicates himself to pursuing love and justice and exterminating evil and overturning injustice wherever he goes. He is quite senile, prone to speeches and tangents as well as making dramatic entrances, and is apparently acquainted with Litchi, always willing to go charging hammily headlong if he sees someone making her upset. Despite his brashness, it seems that he is more likely a person that approaches anything he does in an overzealous way, subtlety not usually at the forefront of his mind. He also wants Ragna’s bounty, believing him to be a criminal and nothing more. In the home console version, when he uses his Fuurinkazan move, its own theme song, “Omae no Tetsui ni Kugi wo Ute”, sung by Hironobu Kageyama, will start playing. This song, along with his choice of clothing, movement and mannerisms, is derrived as a parody of the tokusatsu hero concept, more specifically Kamen rider.
Height: 20-200 cm
Weight: 5-1000 kg
Blood Type: Unknown
His mind has been so deeply corrupted that human beings can no longer hope to understand his thoughts or motives, with one exception: everything he does, he does in search of knowledge.
This black blob-like creature with a white mask was actually once a man named Han, who formerly worked alongside Tager and Litchi in Sector seven. After a horrible accident involving Armagus, he became what he is today, now housing innumerable insects with his now-blobby body and thriving on knowledge. His horrible condition has rendered him virtually insane, as well as distorting his speech to near incoherancy. He currently lives in the sewers of Kagutsuchi and will attack anyone who visits there, and has also been known to attack and devour his victims to sustain himself. He has been increasingly attacking the Kaka clan as a result. Recently, he has heard of Ragna, whose actions have caused him to surface and decide to look for him to consume his immense life force.
Height: 165 cm
Weight: 42 kg
Birthday: February 22
Blood Type: O
Hobbies: Taking naps, food (steamed buns)
Likes: Big fish
Dislikes: Squiggly (?)
Simple and innocent, with occasional mood swings. She rarely listens to what people have to say and tends to judge people entirely on first impressions.
A resident of the Kaka village and member of the Kaka tribe, Taokaka is a catgirl, wearing a large coat that obscures her true face, only exposing red eyes and a row of teeth. (Wether or not this is her true face is a mystery.) She wants to get back the sky above her village, which was sealed off by humans building cities above her village. She recently heard of a bounty on Ragna’s head and thought getting the bounty sounded a lot of fun, thus becoming a vigilante while she was at it. Despite this resolve, she is considerably both lazy and forgetful, often falling asleep on a whim or becoming hungry moments after a meal. She is good friends with Litchi, affectionately referring to her as “Boobie Lady”. Although, she doesn’t seem to refer to anyone other than herself by name, such as calling Ragna “Good-Guy”, Bang “scruffy-man”, and even Jubei as “Cat-man”. Interesting to note is the fact that the Kaka tribe, which she hails from, is actually genetically engineered from the genes of the original Grimalkin (the name that refers to the species of the Kaka tribe), Jubei, one of the six heroes.
Height: 145 cm
Weight: 31 kg
Birthday: October 31
Blood Type: Unknown
Hobbies: Tea, favorite snacks (milk crepes, financiers)
Values: Time, her favorite teacup
Likes: Sweet things (Especially cake)
Dislikes: Being bored, bell peppers
As the child of an aristocratic family, she is well-educated and accustomed to high standards in many aspects of her life. She is normally quiet, but is also very arrogant and self-centered. She rarely does anything on her own and is usually accompanied by her servants, Nago and Gii.
However, she treats them rather poorly, and a day out of the castle seldom goes by without Gii nearly dying.
The current head of the noble vampire clan of Alucard, Rachel slipped out of her castle in search of fun because she hates to be bored. Despite her status however, she deeply loathes her vampiric impulses. She seems to be stalking Ragna – this is because she accidentally turned him into a half-vampire giving him his powers. (This is also the reason behind his heterochromia.) Rachel can apparently create a small pocket dimension called Requiem, which she calls the dream world. She is often accompanied by her familiars, Nago and Gii, whom she often treats very roughly, and is supervised by her butler and guardian Valkenhayn. Rachel is the only character seemingly aware of the full extent of the story. She has control of the Tsukiyomi unit, a device (probably Armagus) that is able to deflect the blast that was capable of destroying Ikaruga with minimal effort.
Height: 144 cm
Weight: 35 kg
Birthday: May 5
Blood Type: AB
Hobbies: Violin, chess
Values: His sister
He seems to think like an adult and always carries out his duties effectively and efficiently. Ever courteous, Carl always has a smile on his face, even when he’s staring down a target.
Carl is a young boy who, like Noel and Jin, was also a student at the Military Academy, but somehow dropped out while Noel and Jin graduated. Currently, he is after Ragna’s bounty, leading him to be a vigilante as well. He often travels with a maid-like puppet called Nirvana, whom he calls his sister Ada. What he doesn’t know is that it might be Nirvana controlling his actions – Nirvana is actually a sentient, cursed puppet that drives its user insane – a Nox Nyctores similar to Jin’s sword and Noel’s pistol. Carl was mad at his father for doing something to his real sister Ada (whom he calls Nirvana because she reminds him of her), leading him to want revenge. (He specifically said that his father “did this to you [Ada],” suggesting that Nirvana was once really his sister.) This has led Carl to a state of extreme paranoia and possessiveness over his “sister.” However, Hakumen states that Nirvana does not cause madness, but rather runs off the weilder’s desire to kill, so in the end it is unknown whether Carl is insane or Nirvana is truely Carl’s sister, Ada.
Height: 208 cm
Weight: 155 kg
Blood Type: Unknown
Dislikes: The Black Beast
Hakumen approaches any situation with logic and cold analysis. His only concern is finding the most efficient way to complete the task at hand.
One of the six heroes, Hakumen is a samurai-like cyborg wielding a sword as tall as he is and wearing a mask that completely hides his face. After the defeat of the Black Beast, Hakumen was trapped in the Gate for centuries until he was finally released by Kokonoe when Ragna appeared. He has since become Kokonoe’s servant, often finding his battles interrupted by her much to his agitation. Hakumen often says that his sword will purify the world of sin and vanquish that which is evil. In truth, Hakumen is in fact Jin from a different timeline. Despite the fact that Jubei is regarded as the world’s strongest being, he states in the chibi show that Hakumen was the real star, maybe indicating that the cyborg either took charge of the battle through leadership, delivered the killing blow to the Black Beast, or is actually stronger than Jubei.
Height: 157 cm
Weight: 48 kg
Birthday: December 25
Blood Type: A
Hobbies: Shopping via the internet (so she doesn’t have to meet people), writing poems (never shows them to anyone)
Values: Parents / Family
Likes: Anything cute
Dislikes: Bugs, especially ones with lots of legs
She appears to be cool-headed and reserved on the surface, but she is actually very lonely. Unfortunately, she is not very good at interacting with other people and finds it difficult to make friends. She excels in combat and little else. Rumor has it her cooking can take out a man even faster than her guns.
This young girl was found amidst the burning fields of Ikaruga where she was rescued, and then adopted by the family of Vermillion. It was because of her outstanding combat activity that she became a high-ranking member of the NOL using the Nox Nyctores “Bolverkr” revolver. She was made Jin’s subordinate by the NOL, although she disliked Jin for disliking her because of a traumatic past run-in with v-13. (This is a result of both Noel and v-13 having the same face.) When Jin rushed off to hunt down Ragna without permission from the NOL, Noel was assigned to stop him and bring him back to his post at the Library. In truth, Noel suffers from amnesia. She is actually u-12, the predecessor of v-13, which explains why Jin thought she had her successor’s face. Also in truth, she is actually the true reincarnation of Ragna’s and Jin’s sister Saya, and is said to be the true posessor of the Azure Grimoire. However, considering their relatively close ages (Jin, Ragna, and Noel), she could actually be Saya, somehow surviving the ordeal when they were young. This can be reinforced by the story mode’s opening, which ends with the destruction of Ikaruga and the first appearance of Noel, looking at the approximate age that she was before ‘dying’. She is easily won over by small, cute animals (agreeing to be dressed up by Litchi if she could play with the Panda in one story path, and even shouts “Hands off the panda!” during battle with her) and has an inferiority complex with her bosom.

Almost always calm and collected, this man has no interest in the affairs of others. As a soldier and a commander, his accomplishments are second to none. Beneath his icy facade, Jin is actually very ambitious and is prone to being jealous of the success of others. He obsesses over anything that catches his interest.
Jin Kisaragi is the Major of the NOL, being one of its elite commanding officers. He is always cool and calm, but is also easily jealous, ambitious, and posessive, with little care for others, treating them like they’re just obstacles. He displayed formidable actions to gain his rank during the Ikaruga Civil War. When he heard that Ragna had arrived on the scene, he quickly abandoned his post to hunt him down by himself. The truth however is that Ragna is Jin’s biological brother, and their rivalry with him stems from an accident involving their long lost sister Saya. Despite that Hazama was the one to kill Ragna in the first place, Jin often says that he’s looking forward to killing Ragna ‘again. After the incident, he was adopted into the Kisaragi house, a highly powerful and respected family within the NOL. He possesses a notable psychosis, said to be caused by his sword, the Nox Nyctores “Yukianesa”. While the sword grants him manipulation over ice, it is also speculated to drive its user insane.
Litchi Faye Ling
Height: 170 cm
Weight: 58 kg
Birthday: July 7
Blood Type: AB
Values: Her hair, Lao Jiu
Likes: Japanese sake
Dislikes: Indecisive people
A very straightforward and honest woman, she is loved and respected by everyone who knows her. Most of the time she is a kind and loving woman, but when she gets drunk, she gets a little…insistent.
A renowned doctor living in Orient Town, located in Kagutsuchi. She owns a clinic there and is helped by her assistant Lin Hua. She worked with Tager and Han in Sector Seven until the incident where Han became Arakune. She defends the local townspeople from Arakune and seeks to restore him to his former self through any means necessary, even through death. She also seems to respect Bang, even apologizing to him if she defeats him in a match, although she remains unaware of the true extent of his feelings for her. She is often subject to adoration for her noticably large bust. She is well-known and trusted by the Kaka clan living beneath Kagutsuchi, often bringing them food or teaching their members. She is also the host of her own Fourth Wall Mail show “Tell Me! Dr. Litchi”, drawn in chibi-fied form, where she teaches about the plot of BlazBlue and answers questions from various other characters, ranging from Taokaka’s elders to even Ragna.
Height: 185 cm
Weight: 78 kg
Birthdate: March 3
Blood Type: B
Values: His silver bracelet
Likes: Meat dishes
He has the ability to act on what he believes, but seldom plans ahead or thinks about what might happen next. He usually relies on brute strength to see him through most problems and has a tendency to rush headlong into trouble. He has a foul mouth and often draws attention to himself, whether he wants to or not. Deep down, however, he’s not a bad person and doesn’t seem to care much about being the most wanted person in the world.
The main protagonist of BlazBlue, also known as the Grim Reaper. After destroying a branch of the NOL, he was labeled as a wanted criminal and received a large bounty on his head. He posesses a powerful form of Armagus called the Azure Grimoire, which is often either the secondary or primary target of those after his bounty. His ultimate goal is to destroy the Library for reasons unknown. He is Jin’s biological brother, whose rivalry with him stems from an accident that happened with their sister, Saya, who was presumed to be dead. His right arm is mechanical because his real one was cut off in a fight against Hazama (who at the time was disguised as Jin.) He was resurrected by Rachel as a vampire, causing one of his green eyes to turn red. The Azure Grimoire he posesses is a fake, and the real grimoire is actually destined to be wielded by Noel.

Blood Type: Natural Oil
Hobbies: Building ships in bottles
Values: Kokonoe (his parent)
Dislikes: Salt water
Originally the leader of an Ikaruga unit, Tager suffered a mortal wound during the Ikaruga Civil War and was forced to withdraw. He was revived as an enormous cyborg by Kokonoe, whom he pledged loyalty to afterwards. After his revival, he bears a similar resemblance to a demon, which resulted in him dubbed as the “Red Devil of Sector Seven”. He is feared by many, but in truth is an easy-going, peaceful gentle giant who hates violence. He has resumed his duties since his revival as a cyborg and is currently not only pursuing Ragna (although, more accurately, he’s after Ragna because he knows Hakumen will find him, who is his primary target), but is also looking for Arakune.
Bound by his sense of duty and obligation, he executes his missions flawlessly, given what he has to work with. He is always thinking one step ahead, looking for an exit strategy. Kokonoe places great faith in him.
He has become known by others as the “Red Devil”, but he himself is actually an easy-going man who dislikes needless conflicts.
Height: 155 cm
Weight: 45 kg
Birthday: December 31
Blood Type: Unknown
Hobbies: Thinking about Ragna
Dislikes: Everything else
Although she looks like a person, she is essentially a machine programmed for destruction and therefore speaks in emotionless fragments, like a computer.
Only around Ragna does she behave like a human being—specifically, a bubbly little girl—but even that is only a means to an end: her purpose is to absorb Ragna and his power, and become an even greater weapon.
A Mecha Musume who was sealed in the Sheol Gate. She was programmed to terminate anyone she deems as hostile subjects that come near the Gate. ν-13 is also shown to have a split personality, split between an emotionless girl when around others and a Yandere when around Ragna, who she is in love with, though this might be how she was programmed to act. ν-13 wants to absorb Ragna and have him join her in destroying the world, because she, too, posesses an Azure Grimoire (although not knowing that the grimoire she posesses is actually a fake and could possibly kill both of them). When Ragna refuses to join her and breaks her heart, she decides to take him by force. She also knows Hakumen, recognizing him as a “SUSANOOH Unit”. She was made as a clone of Saya, Ragna’s and Jin’s sister who was presumed dead, when, in fact, Noel is the true reincarnation of Saya. Both of them even have a couple of shared memories, particularly one of a young Ragna. Jin often recognizes her face because her face reminds him of Saya, yet hates her for a traumatic past run-in with her, thus leading to his disliking towards Noel. Like Ragna, ν-13, too, may also have been reincarnated from the Black Beast. In battle, she summons numerous swords to keep pressure on her opponents from a distance. Her battle appearance even stems from an apparatus, resembling something between a coffin and a sword, that is sometimes summoned during her battle entrance.
Even more reason to move to Japan. They always get the awesome stuff. Yeah, PlayStation Home for the PlayStation 3 in JAPAN will get a huge Gundam statue. If nothing else inspires you to move to Japan, this definitely should. Awesome.
Today I was in the arcade playing Guilty Gear and upon passing through the doors I saw Moonwalker in its retro cabinent and a few hours later, here I am writing about a new Michael Jackson game. With all the hype evolving around Michael Jackson’s death who wouldn’t have imagined that they would create another Michael Jackson game in his memorial? But no, this isn’t a game that was created after Michael Jackson’s death, it was a game that MJJ Productions states is an game that has been in development for months. The game is rumoured to release on XBox 360 and/or PlayStation 3 later in the year. I wonder if it will be more expensive now that Michael Jackson is dead?
In a GameSpot interview Sammy Matsushima described Demon’s Soul as being a real time RPG that has no pause screen. You are the last surviving hero in a fantasy world created with an interactive environment. At the beginning of the game you can choose from one of 13 classes such as cleric, knight, or magician. The trailer looks amazing and the system seems very easy to pick up. Matsushima advised that an expierenced gamer may take 15-18 hours to complete the game while the average gamer may take up to 30 hours. The story flow seems reminiscent of Oblivion as you choose your own path but what is unique is that level up by using soul points to gain skills and equipment upgrades. The game is scheduled for release for October 6, 2009! There is talk of a special edition including a strategy guide that will not be available through any other method. So get in your pre-orders!
We’ve all been through the sitatuion in which we purchase new technology and what happens a few months later, newer technology releases and we’re stuck with a piece of technology that is just as good as the new technology but maybe slightly different or in this case has different levels and awesome graphics and we totally want to be able to enjoy both games at once right? *deep breath*
Well, some word from Valve’s Doug Lombardi has been announced that developers are trying to see if they can come up with a way to use L4D with L4D2.
It is definitely very fustrating to not be able to cross-play between a title of a series between the other titles on the series, so let’s keep our fingers crossed.
About three months ago I attended a local convention and stumbled across a fighting game that I had never heard of. Everyone around me was enthralled by Left 4 Dead, Halo 3, and Rock Band 2. In a dark corner of the room a lone gent was playing quite feverishly and I being the dork that I am must always see what is not popular at the moment because whatever is not popular at the moment is what truely deserves to be popular, in my opinion. 😉 I stumbled across BlazBlue and tonight was the first night that I have played it since three months ago. The game just released in the US and luckily I have my hands on the special edition that includes the soundtrack by artists Kotoko and Hironobu Kageyama. ( By the way, the soundtrack is awesome! )
The art work alone is impressive! There are very few fighting games that keep me entertained. BlazBlue, so far, has given me a wide variety of characters (a total of 12) to play with until I find one that captivates me enough to focus on. The game comes from Arc System Works, the same studio behind my all time favorite fighting game, Guilty Gear. Take a peek at the trailer below… and drool. :)~
