Prototype – Exactly The Opposite of Its Name!

Prototype, the game that does not live up to its name. Can we actually be rewarded for wreaking havoc? With the stresses of day to day living and especially the economy, working dead end jobs, or just trying to make it somewhere in our lives, isn’t video games the one thing that us gamers feel we can turn to and dwelve into a world where none of our real lives can interfere? Well, I don’t know about the rest of the gamers out there, but a video game is definitely my place to zone out and forget about harsh reality from time to time.

“Can you make the average gamer care about the teetering schoolbus on the edge of a bridge about to fall into the ravine,” asks Prototype’s lead designer Eric Holmes. “We’ve done conclusive testing and decided that… no you can’t. In fact every player would push that bus off the side of the bridge, swim down in the ravine to look at the carnage, and then expect to be given points for it.”

“You have to take into account that the player is going to be an absolute son of a bitch in every single scenario,” says Holmes. “Anything you put in the game they will try to blow up, break, batter it, drop things on top of it, anything they can do they will try. So that’s why Prototype fully embraces the spirit of players behaving badly.”

You know what I say to that? Heck yeah. We love to see everything explode. In fact, when I play a game that doesn’t have a destructable environment, I am disappointed!

“So the core of our game is really our character,” says Holmes. “What’s happened to him, what he can do, and who’s responsible. That’s the core of the story, and the core of the experience is what comes out of that character. And the whole play experience is coming out of that character. He’s a grey man, he’s not a hero, he’s not a villain, but he is fully equipped to do very bad things – the way the player wants him to. But there is also a reason for him to do that given the setting he is in.”

So imagine this, the setting is New York City with a virus on the loose. The virus turns people into zombie-like beasts. The military comes in to put the city under lock down. The whole city becomes a war zone.

“Think ‘Tom Clancy meets Stephen King’,” says Holmes. “Clancy is cutting edge, military, and real world, Stephen King is something disturbing. You put it all together and you get Prototype. It’s important to make this thing feel grounded, make it feel real, set it in a familiar place. That makes it more intense than if it was, for example, a shapeshifter on Mars in the year 3000. If the shapeshifter is in New York then there’s something not quite right about that, it’s a bit too close to home, and the events that take place will therefore also become disturbing, too.”

Prototype is obviously not the prototype for most games. I am genuinely excited to see this game in action, of course, played in my own hands. DESTRUCTION!!!

Soul Calibur 4 Screen shots & Review by PLAY Magazine

In a review by Play Magazine, Play revealed that Darth Vader and Secret Apprentice are in Soul Calibur 4. They have also have confirmed that the rumors about Kratos being in the game being false. Play is also saying that Soul Calibur 4 looks better on the PS3 than it does the 360.

The animation has always been superb, but now the detail and solidity of the character models match it. Mitsurugi’s scars, Vader’s shiny armour, Taki’s… assets, they’ve all been crafted with such care and attention, each pixel has been given some sort of flair or purpose. On a decent 720p TV Soul Calibur IV is one of the best looking games on the PS3, and for once better looking than the 360 version, and is the ideal thing to put on when a mate pops round.

If you’ve had a favourite character in the past, then the alterations will be pretty easy to notice. It’s more of an overhaul than Soul Calibur III was over its predecessor, and it does genuinely feel new and fresh. And the stunning visuals don’t hurt either. Soul Calibur IV is absolutely gorgeous.

That last sentence makes me purr like a little kitten. Absolutely gorgeous is what I was hoping for! To read the full review and check out more screen shots, click the link below.

Playstation 3 Exclusive: Hardware 2

Highly talented developers Sony London Studios, Sony Liverpool, and Incognito Entertainment(makers of Warhawk) revealed a joint project which is currently being called Hardware 2. As some of you may have heard, Hardware: Online Arena is an online multiplayer game that focuses on vehicular destruction using varying means such as missiles, lasers and machine guns. However, the newly revealed Hardware 2 is a completely different game.

You will be able to customize your vehicle right down to the color, items, weapons and even more. You will be able to fight in Tanks and Jeeps, Bikes and Helicopters. You will be able to literally destroy everything that gets in your path. The damage will be unbelievable because everything is linked together, when you destroy a building it can crash onto another building and get damaged realistically.

You can look at it as the next gen Carmageddon meets Twisted metal.

There will be battles of up to 50 vs 50 and there will be plenty of game modes including 1 vs 99. This is unbelievable news for the PlayStation 3. There will be deathmatch, capture the flag, king of the hill, and fourteen other game modes that are currently being tested.

The online part will be very important and they are going to make sure that Clan support is included. You can have a clan emblem, create your own tournaments, and build up your reputation. The reputation is something special, some games encourage that you destroy buildings and kill innocent people, well Hardware 2 is different, you should avoid it… You will need to take the decision if your shot will be accurate enough or else you will kill 50 people, that’s what military is all about. The more ‘clean’ you play, the better your reputation will become.

This sounds like a game that I definitely will want to pick up. Release date anyone?

Comic-Con Announces Dexter Game

Special guest Mark Ecko announced new details on Showtime’s hit thriller Dexter.. the game. Dexter will be released only on the iPhone and iPod Touch. (Which means yours truly will probably never get paws on it as I most likely will never own either of the two. )

What is so special about Dexter being available only on the iPhone and iPod Touch? Players will use gesture controls, text messaging, and phone calls to interact with the game. Awesome! Ecko didn’t reveal anything else or provide any footage.

I am a big fan of alternate reality games (ARG) and Dexter sounds somewhat to fit in that genre. Maybe I will find someone that has an iPhone or an iPod Touch. Hmm.

Sega’s US President Comments on E3

“E3 was a strange beast this year. We had an extremely strong product showing, had some great meetings, and got our messaging over pretty strongly – all at an event that had all the atmosphere of a large hospital corridor.”

Sega’s US President Simon Jeffrey commented about the atmosphere of E3 this year being like that of a “large hospital corrider”

He added: “We are big supporters of the ESA, and believe in an efficient need to communicate with the trade at all levels, but we’d like to see something that represents the fun, dynamic nature of the industry a little better without going back to the insanity that was E3 of old.”

Okay, all I have to say is, why did you change E3 then?! Everything was fine before. It may have been insanity, but it was what it should have been. A celebration! I wasn’t at E3, but the overall excitement of E3 was dull compared to years before. Come on, this is the video game industry, not a surgeon’s conference on how to effectively perform heart surgery.

Liven it up guys!

Kaz Hirai Would Rather Take A Bullet To The Head!!

Sony’s Kaz Hirai does not want any XBox 360 Exclusives. In an interview, Hirai would rather take a bullet to the head than have a XBox 360 Exclusive. Take a look.

Aftonbladet: If you had to choose ONE exclusive Xbox 360 title and launch it for the PS3 instead, which game would it be?
Hirai: I don’t think I have to choose any…..
Aftonbladet: You have to pick one.
Hirai: Again, I don’t think I have to pick one because we have such a fantastic lineup of games.
Aftonbladet: But if someone is holding a gun to your head and you have to choose one. Which game would it be?
Hirai: Okay.. then they have to shoot me, because I really don’t think we need any.

Bungie Dissappointed At E3

Some of us were looking forward to hearing the big announcement about the new Halo game that we have all heard rumors about. Did they think that the Microsoft press conference was so spectacular that we forgot about the rumors and their chance to confirm or deny?! Well, we got this letter instead.

Hang on folks, hopefully it will come soon. I don’t know about you guys, but I am very curious about what Bungie has in store for us.
